June Update

"If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body."

~ 1 Corinthians 12:17-20

Hello From Kenya

I can't believe I have been here two months now. It has truly been incredible so far! A mentor of mine once said "There is no greater place to be than at the centre of God's will,” and I can say that statement has never felt truer for me. As I dive into life and work here in Kenya I have felt such assurance and confidence that this is exactly where I am supposed to be.

Our media team has been incredible to work with and get to know over the last few months! Danielle, my fellow Canadian and short-termer has been such a blessing to have here as we navigate all the new things together!

The rest of our team has been serving in missions for a long time! We have Neil, Tim, Adrian, and Tohru. It has been great to spend time with Neil and his family while the rest of our team is working with us remotely as they are on home assignment for the next few months.

WORK UPDATES

"Put your hand in" is a phrase that has been heard a lot around our office the last little while. I've had the privilege of starting to edit a project that embodies the concept of a Mabaan saying, which is "Put Your Hand In." The Mabaan are a people group in South Sudan, and a few years ago after many put their hands in, they were able to receive the complete bible in their Mabaan language.

It was over an 80 year process and now we are working on editing a story about this people group and the impact of having their bible in their language. I've enjoyed listening to many interviews and working on the edit, as we get the ball rolling on this video. And now our team will all get a chance to put their hand in as we work to complete this video.

Peny’s Story

In my first week here, the team had a chance to interview a woman named Peny who is serving in East Pokot, which is in North West Kenya. Peny has been there for over 11 years, living among the East Pokot people, building relationship and community through dance and song. Danielle has been editing her story over the last month and we are so excited to be able to share that now with all of you!

I had the opportunity to have a quiet evening with Danielle and Peny as we shared a cup of chai the night before she left Nairobi to go back to East Pokot. I was so encouraged by her story and her willingness to sit with us and talk instead of packing for her trip! We shared our stories and I was able to hear first hand how God led her to East Pokot. Even when the power went out, Danielle quickly turned on her iPhone flashlight and we continued to share and pray for one another. I can't wait for you to hear her story and I hope you're as encouraged as I have been.

Fun Moments

I've certainly been taking advantage of all the fun things to do here! One thing I've been really enjoying is our weekly Kiswahili lessons. It has been great to learn the language and have someone to practice with! Danielle and I have taken to decorating our walls in the living room with sticky-notes of all the words and phrases we've been learning! Learning the language has been a great way to connect with the culture and the people I get to work with.

Over the last few months, I've been staying very active with our morning run crew and even accomplished my first ever 10km in The Run for the Bibleless. I have also gone on a few hikes as a group of us tackled Ngong Hills and Mount Longonot!

As a short-termer I also have the privilege of visiting some of the ministries SIM is involved in. Over the last month, I visited a couple of schools and took a day trip to Kijabe where I was able to visit a hospital, health clinic, and a school/children's home. It was great to spend time with one of the SIM couples serving in Kijabe and see the work they do first hand!

Danielle and I were also able to attend a Kenyan wedding! It was so fun to experience a wedding here and get all dressed up!
